Signed for a record fee, Yan Diomandé is expected to become one of the major symbols of Real Madrid’s new era. Yet after just two La Liga matches, his limited playing time is already raising questions.
Yan Diomandé was one of Real Madrid’s biggest arrivals of the summer transfer window. Signed for a record-breaking fee, the highly rated 19-year-old Ivorian winger moved to the Spanish capital after an impressive spell with RB Leipzig, where he registered 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances.
Two matches into the new La Liga season, José Mourinho has opted to introduce him gradually. With two substitute appearances and only 32 minutes on the pitch, Diomandé is still adapting to a new club, a new coach, a different league and an extremely competitive squad.
At this stage, there is obviously no reason to sound the alarm. Two games are nowhere near enough to draw definitive conclusions. Diomandé is only 19 years old and has just arrived in Madrid, so not immediately becoming a regular starter is perfectly understandable.
However, his situation will naturally be one to monitor in the coming weeks. After two league fixtures, the Ivorian has yet to start a match, while Mourinho chose to keep the same starting XI against Real Sociedad. More than anything, that decision suggests the Portuguese coach currently wants to rely on a structure that is already producing positive results.
The real question, therefore, is not about Diomandé’s first 32 minutes in a Real Madrid shirt, but what happens next. If his role remains limited over the coming weeks and months, questions about his integration will inevitably become louder, particularly considering his status and the huge financial investment made to bring him to the Bernabéu.
Güler, Bellingham, Vinícius and Mbappé: a quartet taking shape
This is where Mourinho could eventually face an interesting dilemma. Real Madrid’s attacking structure is beginning to develop clear automatisms, with several key players already showing encouraging chemistry.
Arda Güler is becoming increasingly influential in the creative department, while Jude Bellingham is operating closer to the opposition penalty area, where Mourinho wants to make the most of his ability to score goals and attack spaces. Against Espanyol, a combination between the two players led to Madrid’s opening goal.
Alongside them, Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior remain Real Madrid’s biggest attacking threats. Mbappé scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad, while Vinícius regained some confidence and influence by contributing a goal and an assist in the same match.
That is precisely why Diomandé’s situation could become complicated if it continues for too long. Madrid’s attack is already beginning to function efficiently, meaning introducing another player into the starting XI would not simply involve replacing one name with another. Mourinho could be forced to alter tactical relationships and balances that are already taking shape.
Finding his place in the system is the real challenge
The debate surrounding Diomandé is therefore less about his talent and more about identifying his long-term role.
His profile is different from those of several of his teammates. Comfortable on either wing, Diomandé is explosive, aggressive in one-on-one situations and capable of beating defenders through pace and dribbling. Last season, he was considered one of the most effective dribblers across Europe’s major leagues.

However, fitting him into the starting lineup may require Mourinho to rethink certain tactical choices, particularly in midfield and in the way Bellingham and Güler are used. It remains only a tactical possibility rather than a certainty, but it highlights the challenge the coach could face in the coming months.
For now, Mourinho simply has what many coaches would describe as a welcome selection problem. Diomandé can also become a devastating weapon from the bench, using his speed and directness against tiring defenders.
But in the longer term, a player signed for such a significant fee and expected to become an important part of Real Madrid’s project will naturally want to compete for much more than a substitute role. The coming weeks should therefore offer the first real indication of how Mourinho intends to integrate one of the club’s most exciting summer signings.
