Marcelo’s response regarding Barça’s Champions League titles

Marcelo used a simple question about his trophy cabinet to deliver a perfectly timed dig at FC Barcelona.

The moment took place on Wednesday in New York during the official launch event for the FC 27 video game. Marcelo attended the ceremony alongside several former football stars, and as expected, the Brazilian legend quickly became one of the main attractions.

Marcelo's response regarding Barça's Champions League titles

During the event, someone asked the former Real Madrid left-back a straightforward question: “Do you know how many Champions League titles you have won?”

Marcelo immediately saw an opportunity to tease one of Real Madrid’s biggest rivals. With a big smile on his face, he replied: “As many as Barça!”

The joke landed perfectly, especially among Real Madrid supporters, because Marcelo’s answer was also completely accurate.

During his remarkable career at the Santiago Bernabéu, Marcelo lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy five times. He was part of the Real Madrid teams that conquered Europe in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have also won the competition five times. The Catalan club were crowned European champions in 1992, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.

That made Marcelo’s playful response even more effective. In just a few words, the Brazilian managed to remind Barcelona supporters of his own extraordinary European record while once again highlighting the historic rivalry between Spain’s two biggest clubs.

Marcelo certainly knows that rivalry better than most.

He arrived at Real Madrid in 2007 and spent 16 seasons with the Spanish giants, becoming one of the most successful players in the club’s history. During his time in Madrid, he played in 31 Clasicos against Barcelona and experienced countless memorable battles between the two sides.

The Brazilian also collected an incredible 25 trophies with Real Madrid, including six LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and, most importantly, those five Champions League crowns.

There was another interesting detail surrounding the moment in New York. Standing next to Marcelo when he made the comment was none other than Luis Figo.

The Portuguese legend has a particularly famous history with both clubs. Figo played for Barcelona before making his controversial move to Real Madrid in 2000, a transfer that remains one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the Clasico rivalry.

Unsurprisingly, Marcelo’s comment quickly spread across social media. Real Madrid fans enjoyed the joke and widely shared the clip, celebrating another reminder of the Brazilian’s strong connection with the club.

Barcelona supporters were understandably less amused.

The Catalan giants have been waiting for a sixth Champions League triumph since their last European title in 2015. Marcelo, on the other hand, ended his Real Madrid career having personally matched Barcelona’s entire Champions League total.

Even after retirement, it seems the former Madrid captain has not lost his taste for Clasico banter — and this time, just one sentence was enough to get football fans talking again.
