“Yan Diomandé above Yamal”: the remark sparking reactions

Real Madrid are reportedly on the verge of completing one of the most spectacular transfers of the summer window. The Spanish giants are preparing to finalize the signing of Yan Diomandé, the highly rated RB Leipzig winger, in a deal believed to be worth around €132 million. At just 19 years old, the Ivory Coast international is already regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in European football.

His arrival would allow Los Blancos to strengthen an attacking department weakened by Rodrygo’s long-term absence following a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. The uncertainty surrounding Vinicius Junior’s future has also encouraged the Madrid hierarchy to move quickly in the market and secure a new attacking partner for Kylian Mbappé.

A talent who immediately impressed at Leganés

Before joining Leipzig and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising forwards, Diomandé had already made a powerful impression during his first appearances with Leganés’ senior team.

Gonzalez, one of his former teammates, still remembers the moment the young Ivorian trained with the first team. Speaking in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, the experienced defender described how Diomandé’s raw ability immediately stunned the senior players.

"Diomandé above Yamal": the remark sparking reactions

“We couldn’t believe how talented he was. From the first touch of the ball, you could see that he was different. We looked at each other with our mouths open, wondering where he had come from. He drove us crazy on the left wing. I had never seen a young player produce that kind of performance,” Gonzalez recalled.

The former Leganés player even went as far as comparing Diomandé’s potential with that of Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal. It is an extremely bold comparison, considering that Yamal has already become a key figure for both his club and the Spanish national team.

“Honestly, yes. It may sound crazy, but when I look at his development, I can see him reaching that level,” Gonzalez said.

According to him, the main difference between the two players at present is experience and consistency. Yamal has already enjoyed regular playing time at the highest level, while Diomandé still needs to prove himself over a longer period.

“Lamine has had more continuity and has shown his quality for longer, but if Yan gets the same opportunity, I think he can reach his level or even surpass him. He is exceptionally gifted. His potential is enormous. My only major question is whether he will be able to handle the pressure mentally,” he added.

The profile of a modern and complete attacker

Diomandé’s profile appears perfectly suited to modern football. Capable of playing on either wing, he combines impressive speed, physical strength, technical quality and the ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations.

“Everything about his level was exceptional. He was fast, powerful, two-footed, combined well with his teammates, constantly took players on and struck the ball very well,” Gonzalez explained.

However, the Ivorian is far more than a traditional dribbler. His movement, intelligence and understanding of space also make him extremely difficult to defend against.

“It is difficult to compare him to anyone because he does not excel in only one area. He is technically brilliant, understands the game, combines well, makes excellent runs, is exceptional in one-on-one situations and knows how to attack space. He is a complete player.”

Should the transfer be completed, Diomandé will arrive in Madrid with enormous expectations. He will have to cope with the pressure of a record-breaking fee and prove that he has the quality to become one of the next major stars at the Santiago Bernabéu.
