PSG: Why Luis Campos ultimately dropped Yan Diomandé

One of the most sought-after players during the summer 2026 transfer window, Yan Diomandé was firmly on Paris Saint-Germain’s radar. The French champions seriously explored the possibility of signing the RB Leipzig winger before eventually withdrawing from the race because of several concerns surrounding the deal.

PSG were looking for a new attacking player to prepare for the possible departure of Bradley Barcola and had identified Diomandé as one of the most exciting options on the market. The young Ivory Coast international enjoyed an outstanding season in Germany, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for RB Leipzig.

His impressive performances also earned him a place in the Ivory Coast squad for the 2026 World Cup. Fast, technically gifted and capable of making a difference in one-on-one situations, the Abidjan-born winger quickly attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, the cost of the operation discouraged a number of potential suitors. RB Leipzig are reportedly demanding around €120 million to sell their talented attacker. Such a fee could make Diomandé the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history, with the Spanish giants now considered the favourites to complete the transfer.

Although the Merengues have not yet reached a final agreement with the German club, they have benefited from the withdrawal of several competitors, including Paris Saint-Germain. According to information revealed by independent journalist Romain Molina, the financial demands made by the player’s representatives played an important role in PSG’s decision.

Diomandé’s entourage reportedly requested close to €20 million in signing bonuses and agent commissions. Those demands were considered excessive by the Parisian management, but financial concerns were apparently not the only reason behind the club’s withdrawal.

Luis Campos is also said to have expressed concerns internally about the complexity of the player’s contractual situation. Diomandé reportedly finds himself at the centre of several disputes involving former representatives, image rights and various agreements signed during the early stages of his career.

Currently represented by Roc Nation Sports, the former Leganés player is reportedly involved in a conflict with an agency connected to former Ivory Coast international Max-Alain Gradel, who played a key role in his move to RB Leipzig. Some of these disputes could even be examined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The uncertainty surrounding the case is also believed to have convinced Liverpool and Manchester City to abandon their interest. That situation could now benefit Real Madrid, who remain in negotiations with Leipzig.

Meanwhile, PSG have already turned their attention to another target. The French champions have reportedly accelerated talks for Ajax winger Mika Godts. According to Fabrizio Romano, the young Belgian attacker has already given his approval to a potential move to Paris.

Ajax are believed to be demanding around €60 million for the player. Although that remains a significant investment, it is only half the amount requested by Leipzig for Diomandé. PSG therefore appear to have chosen a more affordable option that also carries fewer contractual and legal risks.
