August 16, 2026 could become an important date in the young career of Sergio Martínez. As Racing Santander returned to La Liga after fourteen years away from Spain’s top flight, José Alberto López handed the midfielder a starting role against Villarreal. Only minutes later, Martínez announced himself with a spectacular goal in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
However, his impressive performance was not entirely unexpected. Racing Santander have been carefully managing the development of a player who is regarded internally as one of their most promising talents. Several major Spanish clubs had already started monitoring him before he even made his La Liga debut.
A rapid rise at Racing Santander
Born in 2007 in Laredo, Cantabria, Sergio Martínez is a product of football in the region. After beginning his development at CD Laredo, he joined Racing Santander and steadily progressed through the club’s youth categories before reaching the senior squad.
His development accelerated significantly last season. Martínez made his first-team breakthrough in 2025 and divided his playing time between Racing Santander and Rayo Cantabria, giving him the opportunity to gain valuable experience.
His performances during pre-season particularly impressed José Alberto López, who decided to give the midfielder greater responsibility and integrate him more regularly into the first-team environment.
That confidence was quickly rewarded. In his first La Liga appearance, Martínez started alongside Gustavo Puerta and produced a performance suggesting that he is already capable of competing at the highest level.
Sergio Martínez: creativity and a powerful shot
Martínez operates mainly as a central midfielder and possesses a creative profile. The right-footed Spaniard is comfortable participating in the build-up, finding spaces between opposition lines and making forward runs.
His technical quality, close control and ability to operate in tight areas are among the characteristics that have attracted the attention of scouts.
Against Villarreal, however, another major weapon became obvious: his shooting ability.
Martínez struck from outside the penalty area with an effort reportedly measured at 126.7 km/h, sending the ball underneath the crossbar and beyond Luiz Júnior.
At 19 years and 93 days old, Martínez became Racing Santander’s youngest La Liga goalscorer of the 21st century.
Real Madrid are already monitoring him
His breakthrough has not gone unnoticed. According to AS, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal had already shown interest in Sergio Martínez last season, before he had accumulated any experience in Spain’s first division.
Several clubs reportedly submitted proposals during the previous winter transfer window, but Martínez decided to remain at Racing Santander because he believed staying with his boyhood club offered the best environment for his development.

Racing have also demonstrated their confidence in him. Martínez is under contract until June 30, 2029, although his reported €3 million release clause could quickly attract considerable attention if he continues performing at this level.
For now, Martínez should therefore be considered a player Real Madrid are monitoring rather than an imminent signing. The Spanish giants have other priorities before potentially making a move.
For the youngster, the objective is simple: continue developing at Racing Santander.
After rejecting early opportunities to leave, Sergio Martínez now has an entire La Liga season to demonstrate that his spectacular debut was only the beginning. If he manages to turn his obvious potential into consistent performances, Real Madrid may have even more reason to follow his progress very closely.
