As every year, four of Spain’s biggest clubs will battle for the Spanish Super Cup, but the 2027 edition will come with a major change. For the first time in several years, the competition will not take place in Saudi Arabia.
Since the introduction of the new four-team format in 2020, the Spanish Super Cup has been staged in Saudi Arabia, where the tournament has become an important fixture on the Spanish football calendar. However, the competition will temporarily move elsewhere in 2027 due to Saudi Arabia hosting the AFC Asian Cup during the same period in which the Super Cup is usually played.

As a result, the Spanish Football Federation has had to find a new destination for this prestigious mini-tournament, which will once again bring together four of the strongest teams in Spanish football.
This season, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid are the four clubs qualified for the competition. The tournament will follow its usual format, with two semi-finals followed by a final to determine the winner of the first major Spanish trophy of 2027.
Barcelona will arrive as defending champions after defeating Real Madrid, then managed by Xabi Alonso, in the 2026 final. The Catalan giants will therefore be looking to retain their crown, but they can expect fierce competition from their traditional rivals.
Turkey becomes the new destination
The major novelty concerns the host country. The 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be played in Turkey, with Istanbul chosen to stage the tournament. The decision was officially confirmed on Thursday by the Spanish Football Federation.
For Real Madrid, the choice of Istanbul could provide a particularly exciting atmosphere. The Spanish giants enjoy enormous support across the world, and Turkey is no exception. Madrid can expect thousands of supporters to turn out for their matches, especially with Turkish international Arda Güler among the most popular figures in José Mourinho’s squad.
The presence of Güler could transform the tournament into something resembling a home event for Real Madrid. The midfielder remains hugely popular in his homeland, and Turkish supporters are expected to fill the stands to see one of their country’s biggest stars representing the most successful club in European football.

Another important change concerns the dates. Instead of taking place in January, as has traditionally been the case in recent seasons, the 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be held between February 2 and February 7.
For José Mourinho and his players, the tournament could represent their first opportunity to win silverware during the decisive second half of the season. With Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad also determined to lift the trophy, the battle in Istanbul promises to be intense.
A new country, a later date and four ambitious clubs: the 2027 Spanish Super Cup is already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing editions since the competition adopted its current format.
