Real Madrid’s bench: the weapon the club was waiting for.

Real Madrid’s opening La Liga match did more than simply get the new season underway. It also offered an early glimpse of something José Mourinho hopes to exploit throughout the campaign: the strength and impact of his bench.

At Cornellà, with the game heading toward an uncertain conclusion against Espanyol, Mourinho turned to his substitutes. Carlos Espí came on during the closing stages and scored the decisive goal to secure all three points for Real Madrid. It was an immediate contribution from the bench and a significant one considering the problems Madrid experienced in this area last season.

“The impact of the players coming off the bench can be just as important as that of the starters,” Thibaut Courtois explained after the match.

Espí was the perfect example. The young striker did more than score the winner. His physical presence allowed Madrid to play more directly, hold up the ball and create a different threat inside the penalty area. Mourinho’s tactical adjustment produced an immediate result.

But Espí was only one part of the story.

Real Madrid’s bench at the RCDE Stadium included players such as Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomandé, Brahim Díaz, Eduardo Camavinga, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Antonio Rüdiger. According to AS, the combined market value of Madrid’s 12 substitutes reached approximately €343.7 million, more than the entire squads of 17 of La Liga’s 20 clubs.

And Mourinho still had important players unavailable, including Aurélien Tchouaméni, Endrick, Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão and Rodrygo.

That depth could become one of Madrid’s biggest advantages.

In previous seasons, however, having quality substitutes did not always translate into decisive contributions. During the 2023-24 campaign, Madrid’s substitutes scored 12 goals in all competitions, with Joselu providing four of them. Last season, the numbers became even more concerning. According to statistics reported by AS, substitutes were involved in only six of Real Madrid’s 77 La Liga goals, representing just 7.79 percent of the total.

Mourinho wants to change that culture.

According to Marca, the Portuguese coach does not want his regular starters playing every match while the rest of the squad becomes disconnected. He wants his so-called “finishers” to remain involved, motivated and ready to influence games.

And Madrid now have several different tactical weapons.

Arda Güler can provide creativity and set-piece quality. Brahim Díaz offers unpredictability between the lines. Diomandé can bring pace and direct running on the wing, while Espí gives Mourinho a traditional centre-forward capable of attacking crosses and occupying defenders. Courtois even jokingly compared him to a “Joselu Jr.”

Mourinho therefore has more than simple replacements. He has players capable of changing the nature of a match.

The coach summed up his philosophy after the Espanyol victory: “Real Madrid must compete seriously in all four competitions. We cannot do that with ten, eleven, twelve or fifteen players. We need this squad.”

One goal from Carlos Espí cannot erase the problems of previous seasons. But it may represent the beginning of something different.

If Mourinho succeeds in keeping every player involved, Real Madrid’s bench could evolve from a collection of talented substitutes into one of the club’s most powerful tactical weapons.
