From David Villa to Rodri, through Neymar, Samuel Eto’o and several other major names, the list of players who have preferred to wear the Barcelona shirt rather than join Real Madrid is quite impressive.
Throughout football history, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have regularly found themselves competing for the same players. The rivalry between the two Spanish giants is not limited to what happens on the pitch during El Clásico. It also extends to the transfer market, where both clubs have often tried to convince some of the biggest stars in world football to join their respective projects.

Ronaldinho
In 2003, Ronaldinho was one of the most sought-after players in European football. After impressing with Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian national team, the attacking midfielder was ready to take the next major step in his career.
Real Madrid were among the clubs linked with him, but Ronaldinho eventually chose Barcelona. It was a decision that would completely transform the direction of the Catalan club.
At the time, Barça were searching for a superstar capable of bringing excitement and success back to Camp Nou. Ronaldinho became exactly that. With his extraordinary technique, creativity, dribbling ability and spectacular goals, the Brazilian quickly established himself as the face of the club.
He won the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and played a decisive role in Barcelona’s Champions League triumph in 2006. More importantly, Ronaldinho helped restore Barcelona’s confidence during a crucial period in the club’s history.
He was also one of the major figures during the emergence of a young Lionel Messi. His decision to join Barcelona rather than pursue other opportunities remains one of the most important transfer moments of the modern era.
Rivaldo
Another Brazilian superstar who ended up making history at Barcelona was Rivaldo.
Before moving to Camp Nou in 1997, Rivaldo had impressed enormously with Deportivo La Coruña. His performances attracted attention from several European giants, including Real Madrid, who were closely monitoring his development.
However, Barcelona moved decisively and secured his signature.
The transfer quickly proved to be an excellent decision. Rivaldo became one of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe, combining technical quality, powerful shooting and an exceptional ability to score spectacular goals.
His performances for Barcelona eventually earned him the Ballon d’Or in 1999.
Even during difficult periods for the club, Rivaldo often carried the team through his individual brilliance. His unforgettable goals and match-winning performances ensured that he became one of the greatest Brazilian players ever to represent Barcelona.
Samuel Eto’o
Samuel Eto’o’s story is perhaps the most painful example from a Real Madrid perspective.
Unlike many of the other players on this list, Eto’o actually belonged to Real Madrid early in his career. The Cameroonian arrived in Spain as a promising youngster but was never able to establish himself permanently in Madrid’s first team.
After several loan spells, he eventually found stability at Mallorca, where he developed into one of the most exciting strikers in La Liga.
Barcelona decided to sign him in 2004, and the move completely changed his career.
At Camp Nou, Eto’o became one of the best centre-forwards in European football. His speed, movement, intensity and finishing ability made him a nightmare for defenders.
He won multiple major trophies with Barcelona and played an important role in the club’s Champions League successes.
For Real Madrid, watching a former player become a superstar and legend at their biggest rival made the situation particularly frustrating.
Dani Alves
Dani Alves is another player who could have taken a very different path.
Following his outstanding performances for Sevilla, the Brazilian right-back attracted interest from several major European clubs. Real Madrid were among those reportedly interested in signing him, but a deal never materialised.
Barcelona eventually secured his services in 2008.
It turned out to be one of the most successful signings in the club’s history.
Under Pep Guardiola, Alves became a crucial part of a team that dominated Spanish and European football. His incredible energy, attacking runs and technical understanding with Lionel Messi made Barcelona’s right side extremely difficult to defend against.
Alves won numerous La Liga titles and Champions League trophies and established himself as one of the greatest right-backs of his generation.
David Villa
Before joining Barcelona in 2010, David Villa had repeatedly been linked with Real Madrid.
The Spanish international had become one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers during his years with Valencia. His name frequently appeared in transfer discussions surrounding the Santiago Bernabéu, and a move to Madrid seemed possible on several occasions.
But Barcelona eventually won the race for his signature.
Villa joined Pep Guardiola’s extraordinary team and immediately became an important part of its attack. Playing alongside Lionel Messi and Pedro, the Spaniard helped Barcelona win La Liga and, most importantly, the Champions League.
His goal in the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United at Wembley remains one of the defining moments of his Barcelona career.
Villa’s decision represented another transfer-market victory for Barcelona in the eternal rivalry with Real Madrid.
From Ronaldinho and Rivaldo to Eto’o, Dani Alves and David Villa, Barcelona have repeatedly managed to attract players who were also on Real Madrid’s radar. Neymar would later become another famous example, while the latest transfer battles involving names such as Rodri show that the rivalry remains as intense as ever.
El Clásico is therefore not only played at the Bernabéu or Camp Nou. Sometimes, the first battle takes place months earlier, behind closed doors, in negotiations for the world’s biggest stars.
