Real Madrid : Guardiola’s prediction about Bernardo Silva

Pep Guardiola spent several successful years working with Bernardo Silva at Manchester City and knows the Portuguese midfielder better than most. Before Silva left England to join Real Madrid, the Spanish coach had already made clear how highly he rated him — both as a player and as a potential future manager.

Guardiola had openly admitted that he would have preferred to see Bernardo finish his playing career at Manchester City.

“I would like him to finish his career at City, but the final decision belongs to the player,” Guardiola explained before Silva eventually chose to leave the Premier League for Real Madrid.

The Manchester City manager also delivered a glowing assessment of the Portuguese international’s qualities.

“He is an incredible signing for this club. He has everything a coach needs. He is good in every area, brilliant in everything you ask him to do, and he always knows how to read the game.”

That exceptional football intelligence is also one of the main reasons Guardiola believes Bernardo Silva could remain involved in the game long after his playing career ends.

“When Bernardo Silva finishes his professional career as a footballer, he will end up on the bench as a coach,” Guardiola predicted.

Interestingly, Guardiola is not alone in holding that view.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has also suggested that Bernardo possesses the personality and tactical understanding required to become a manager. During an interview with The Football Interview, journalist Kelly Somers reminded Silva of Martínez’s comments.

“I spoke to your Portugal coach Roberto Martínez recently, and he told me: ‘When Bernardo finishes playing, he will become a coach.’”

At 31, however, Bernardo Silva still has plenty of football ahead of him before seriously considering a career on the touchline.

For now, his attention is firmly focused on his new challenge at Real Madrid, where he has begun a new chapter after several trophy-filled years with Manchester City.

Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Bernardo explained why the opportunity to join the Spanish giants was simply too difficult to reject.

“Having played against Real Madrid several times, you can feel the importance of the club and how big it is to be here. You understand how special it is to play at the Bernabéu, which is an incredible stadium. When Real Madrid came, it was impossible to say no. I didn’t think twice.”

Being geographically closer to Portugal and his family also influenced the midfielder’s decision.

“Being close to my family, very close to Portugal and in a culture that is very similar helps. But the dream of playing for the best club in football history — because the trophies show that — is a privilege, and I’m very happy.”

Bernardo Silva’s immediate priority is therefore succeeding at Real Madrid and adapting to life under José Mourinho.

Yet Guardiola already appears convinced about what could come next.

Once Bernardo eventually hangs up his boots, the former Manchester City star may not remain away from football for very long. With his tactical intelligence, leadership and understanding of the game, Guardiola believes the Portuguese midfielder is destined for a new challenge — this time from the dugout.
