Denzel Dumfries played his first match for Real Madrid on Saturday as the Spanish giants faced Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly. Despite having arrived at Valdebebas only a few days earlier, the Dutch international was immediately handed a place in the starting lineup by José Mourinho.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but the evening remained a special one for Dumfries, who was able to wear the famous white shirt for the first time. Speaking to Real Madrid TV after the final whistle, the 30-year-old defender expressed his pride and satisfaction following his debut.
“Yes, I feel good. I am very proud to make my debut for Real Madrid,” Dumfries said. “It was a great experience to play my first match, and now we have to continue working hard for the games ahead.”
Mourinho surprised many observers with the role he assigned to his new signing. Instead of using Dumfries as a traditional right-back, the Portuguese coach positioned him much higher up the pitch, almost as a right winger.
He played in front of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to be one of his main competitors for the right-back position this season. However, the tactical setup suggested that Mourinho could also use both players together.
During Real Madrid’s build-up play, Alexander-Arnold regularly moved into a more central position, helping the team form a back three. When the Spanish side lost possession, the England international returned to the right side of the defence.
This tactical adjustment allowed Dumfries to use his speed, physical strength and attacking qualities further forward. Although the position was unfamiliar to him, the Dutchman appeared comfortable with Mourinho’s instructions.
“It was not my natural position,” Dumfries admitted. “This was the first match, so I have to work hard and show what I can do. But I think it was a good friendly match.”
The former Inter Milan player also highlighted his versatility and his willingness to adapt to the demands of his new coach.
“Yes, I can play in different positions. I am used to that,” he explained. “Normally, I play on the right side, but I am ready to help the team wherever the coach needs me.”
Dumfries’ ability to operate as a full-back, wing-back or advanced wide player could give Mourinho several tactical options throughout the season. His physical profile and attacking instincts may prove particularly useful against teams that defend deep and leave little space around the penalty area.

The Netherlands international also spoke positively about his first days with his new teammates. Although he acknowledged that the squad still needed time to build stronger connections, he was impressed by the quality within the group.
“What I am experiencing is incredible,” Dumfries said. “We have only been together for one week, so we still need to get to know each other better. But that is exactly what pre-season is for.”
“There is so much quality in this team, and we are all looking forward to playing the next matches.”
Dumfries’ debut therefore offered Mourinho an early glimpse of what his new signing could bring to Real Madrid: energy, versatility, power and a constant attacking presence on the right flank.
