Has Endrick already lost his gamble at Real Madrid?

Endrick chose to stay at Real Madrid this summer with the ambition of establishing himself in the first team. But while the Brazilian is still waiting for his opportunity, Carlos Espí has already made his mark.

The decision was deliberate. Despite doubts over his potential playing time and the possibility of another temporary move away, Endrick decided to remain at Real Madrid this summer. Several reports indicated that the Brazilian preferred to continue fighting for his future in Madrid rather than look elsewhere for regular minutes.

His reasoning was simple: compete for his place, convince José Mourinho and gradually become an important part of the rotation. But only a few weeks later, the situation already appears more complicated. Carlos Espí’s emergence could make Endrick’s challenge even tougher.

Endrick wanted to fight for his place

The Brazilian knew competition would be intense. Kylian Mbappé remains the obvious first choice through the middle, and his status leaves very little room for another striker hoping to establish himself as a regular starter.

A loan could have allowed Endrick to play consistently. Roma, Aston Villa and Liverpool were among the clubs reportedly interested in offering him more responsibility. However, Endrick preferred to stay at Valdebebas and back himself to earn Mourinho’s confidence.

It was a gamble on his own ability. Endrick wanted to win his place at Real Madrid rather than search for it elsewhere.

Carlos Espí is already changing the picture

That is precisely why Carlos Espí’s breakthrough is so significant. Against Espanyol, the young Spanish striker did more than score the late winning goal. His performance also showed Mourinho exactly what he can bring to the team.

Espí provided a physical presence, played with his back to goal, linked up with teammates and helped Madrid move higher up the pitch before eventually scoring the decisive goal.

His profile is also different from Mbappé’s. While the Frenchman thrives when attacking space, Espí can operate as a traditional focal point, hold the ball up and provide a direct option when Madrid need to change their approach.

For Endrick, that creates another problem. The Brazilian is quicker, more explosive and more mobile, but he also prefers playing centrally. Behind Mbappé, he needs to convince Mourinho that he deserves to be considered a genuine alternative at number nine.

Espí has now entered that race.

It would obviously be premature to suggest that one appearance has completely changed the hierarchy. However, Espí has already achieved something every young player wants: he has given his coach a reason to use him again.

Endrick’s challenge goes beyond Espí. Vinícius Jr, Yan Diomandé, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz and Arda Güler all provide Mourinho with attacking options, meaning opportunities could be limited.

For Endrick, the equation is therefore straightforward: he must prove that he offers something different.

The first half of the season could determine his future. If he earns regular minutes and demonstrates that he can complement or replace Mbappé, his decision to stay will be justified. Otherwise, January could reopen discussions about another loan.

His previous spell at Lyon showed what consistent football could offer him, with eight goals and eight assists in 21 appearances.

For now, nothing has been decided. The season has only just begun, and injuries, form and a demanding schedule can quickly change the hierarchy.

But the contrast is already striking.

Endrick stayed at Real Madrid to fight for his place. Carlos Espí has barely arrived on the scene and has already started winning his battle. Behind Mbappé, the competition is only beginning — but for Endrick, the pressure may increase much faster than expected.
