Eva Carneiro Hits Back at Mourinho and John Terry as Chelsea Row Resurfaces 11 Years Later
The controversial episode involving former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has returned to the spotlight, 11 years after the incident that eventually led to her departure from the London club.
Carneiro has strongly criticised José Mourinho and former Chelsea captain John Terry after the pair revisited the controversy in the new Netflix documentary Mourinho. The dispute dates back to Chelsea’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Swansea City in August 2015, when Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn entered the pitch to treat Eden Hazard late in the game.
Speaking in the documentary, Mourinho maintained that the medical staff had been wrong to enter the field because, in his view, Hazard was not seriously injured. Their intervention meant the Belgian temporarily had to leave the pitch after receiving treatment. With goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois already sent off, Chelsea were briefly reduced to nine players.
Carneiro responded on X, expressing her frustration that the affair had been brought up again more than a decade later.
“After 11 years, here we are reliving the worst moments again. I only hope they made some money out of it,” she wrote.
The former Chelsea doctor also responded directly to Terry, who supported Mourinho’s version of events. Terry claimed that there had been an understanding between the players and Chelsea’s medical staff that doctors should only enter the pitch if an injury was considered particularly serious.
Carneiro rejected that argument, stressing that medical professionals are governed by professional and legal responsibilities rather than tactical considerations.
“We are bound by professional medical and legal rules and conduct. It would be good and more useful for John Terry to learn the Laws of the Game. Time has moved on, my friend,” she said, according to ESPN.
Carneiro also shared a statement from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine explaining that medical staff have a duty to enter the pitch and assess a player whenever requested by the referee.
She later provided her own account of the incident, insisting that referee Michael Oliver had called the medical team onto the pitch twice and that Hazard himself had asked for treatment.
“It is very simple. Michael Oliver invited us onto the pitch twice, Eden Hazard requested medical attention, and we visually checked him from the touchline. He confirmed twice that he needed treatment. At that point, as a professional doctor, my hands were tied,” she explained.
Mourinho, however, continues to defend his reaction. In the documentary, the Portuguese coach said he could tell that Hazard was not genuinely injured and accused the medical team’s intervention of unnecessarily leaving Chelsea with nine players.

At the time, Mourinho described Carneiro and Fearn as “impulsive and naive” and suggested they did not understand football.
Following the Swansea match, both were removed from first-team duties. Carneiro left Chelsea the following month before launching legal proceedings for constructive dismissal, as well as a separate case against Mourinho.
In June 2016, Chelsea reached a settlement with Carneiro and publicly apologised to their former doctor. Mourinho did not issue a public apology.
The Football Association had previously cleared Mourinho of allegations that he used discriminatory language during the incident. He was eventually dismissed by Chelsea in December 2015 following a disastrous start to the club’s Premier League title defence.
More than a decade later, the controversy has clearly lost none of its ability to generate tension.
