Manchester City star Rodri is reportedly edging closer to an official transfer to FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window, in what could become one of the most significant moves of the market.
Real Madrid had been heavily involved in negotiations to sign the Spanish midfielder and, according to reports, Rodri had even given his approval to join Los Blancos. However, the situation changed dramatically after Barcelona entered the race. The Catalan giants managed to convince the Spain international to reconsider his destination, creating frustration in Madrid and adding another chapter to the historic rivalry between the two Spanish powerhouses.
Unsurprisingly, the situation has generated plenty of reactions in Spain. With Real Madrid and Barcelona expected to compete directly for major trophies this season, Rodri’s decision could add even more tension to the upcoming campaign.
Former Real Madrid star Jorge Valdano has now offered his assessment of the situation. The Argentine legend believes Rodri would undoubtedly strengthen Barcelona, but he insists that the midfielder’s influence at the Camp Nou would not be as revolutionary as it could have been at Real Madrid.
According to comments relayed by Defensa Central, Valdano explained that Rodri’s arrival would be a strategic signing for Barcelona because of his ability to add control, intelligence and balance to Hansi Flick’s system.
“Rodri’s signing is strategic for Barça because he will add something special to everything Flick already proposes,” Valdano reportedly said. “But at Real Madrid, he would have revolutionized the way the team plays and improved everything around him.”
Valdano even attempted to quantify the difference in value between Rodri joining Barcelona and Real Madrid missing out on the midfielder.
“For me, what Rodri will bring to FC Barcelona is worth €35 million, while what Real Madrid loses by not signing him is worth €40 million,” he added.
His argument is clear: Barcelona already possess a defined playing identity and several technically gifted midfielders capable of controlling possession. Rodri would certainly improve the team, but Valdano believes his qualities would have addressed an even greater need at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The former Real Madrid player highlighted Rodri’s ability to improve the speed and quality of ball progression, particularly when connecting midfield with the attacking line.

“The ball would have reached the forwards faster, and it would have arrived in better conditions,” Valdano continued. “This kind of impact is not necessarily reflected in the number of goals a player scores. It is an impact on the way a team plays.”
Rodri’s intelligence, positioning, passing range and ability to dictate the rhythm of matches have made him one of the most influential midfielders of his generation. For Valdano, those qualities explain why the Spanish international can transform an entire tactical structure without necessarily producing spectacular individual statistics.
“This player, precisely because of that influence, is the best player in the world,” he concluded.
If Rodri’s move to Barcelona is completed, the transfer could therefore hurt Real Madrid in two different ways: strengthening their biggest domestic rival while simultaneously denying the Merengues the midfielder they believed could transform José Mourinho’s team.
