Yan Diomandé was officially presented at Ciudad Real Madrid. Real Madrid paid €140 million including bonuses to secure the services of the Ivorian winger.
He is expected to be the final signing presented by Real Madrid this summer. Yan Diomandé took his turn posing in front of the club’s 15 Champions League trophies, alongside Florentino Pérez and honorary president Pirri.
The Ivorian winger did not hide his pride in front of the cameras. “I’m proud because this is the biggest club in the world,” he said, before emphasizing the symbolic importance of the move. “Today, everyone dreams of playing for Real Madrid.”
Diomandé was also particularly impressed by his new surroundings at Valdebebas. “To be coached by the best manager in the world and to share a dressing room with the best players in the world is incredible,” he said, before promising to give everything to honor his new shirt.
The Story Behind His Transfer
Yan Diomandé’s arrival was far from straightforward. The transfer of the Ivorian winger from RB Leipzig had reportedly been announced by Fabrizio Romano at the end of July, but the deal was then delayed for several weeks.
Reaching an agreement with the German club was not easy either. Real Madrid initially submitted an offer of €90 million, a proposal Leipzig considered far below their valuation of the player.
However, the biggest obstacle came from elsewhere. A dispute reportedly broke out between the player’s various representatives, with each party claiming a share of the commissions generated by the transfer. The matter eventually reached FIFA, seriously threatening to delay the international certification of the move, an administrative procedure required before Diomandé could officially play in Spain.
The situation was finally resolved in early August. Diomandé eventually joined Real Madrid for €125 million plus €15 million in bonuses, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
A Major Tactical Role
On the pitch, Yan Diomandé offers an extremely complete profile for a winger who is only 19 years old. Naturally a right winger and right-footed, he is also comfortable using his left foot and can operate effectively on the left flank.
He is capable of carrying the ball over long distances at high speed, attacking open spaces and beating defenders one-on-one. But Diomandé is not simply a player who relies on pace. He also possesses the ability to produce the decisive pass, particularly when spaces become tighter around the opposition penalty area.
His role in José Mourinho’s system already appears relatively clear. Diomandé is expected to stay wide and stretch opposition defensive blocks, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to move into more central positions.
Whether that combination becomes Mourinho’s preferred option remains to be seen, especially after the opening league match featured Arda Güler and Denzel Dumfries in similar areas of the pitch.
The Ivorian has even said he is ready to “die” for José Mourinho. He could also become Vinícius Júnior’s natural alternative on the left wing while Real Madrid wait for Rodrygo to return.
A Symbol for African Football
Yan Diomandé also becomes the first Ivorian player in Real Madrid’s history. It is a significant milestone for a club that has featured only a limited number of African players throughout its history.
Brahim Díaz, Achraf Hakimi, Emmanuel Adebayor and Michael Essien are among the most notable African players to have represented the Spanish giants in recent times. Adebayor and Essien were both brought to Madrid by José Mourinho during his first spell at the club.

There is also Mahamadou Diarra. The Malian midfielder became one of the African players to establish himself most successfully at Real Madrid and even wore the captain’s armband during his time in the Spanish capital.
Diomandé’s arrival carries particular significance in Ivory Coast as well. One of the greatest Ivorian players of all time, Didier Drogba, enjoyed some of the finest years of his career under José Mourinho at Chelsea.
Diomandé revealed that he recently spoke with his legendary compatriot before beginning his adventure in Madrid.
“Didier Drogba and I spoke a few days ago. He told me: ‘Be careful, Mourinho is my father. You have to work hard, but he’s a good guy,’” the young winger explained.
At just 19 years old, Yan Diomandé now arrives at the Santiago Bernabéu carrying enormous expectations. His transfer fee immediately places him among the biggest investments in Real Madrid history, but his versatility, speed and technical qualities could also make him one of José Mourinho’s most important attacking weapons.
For Diomandé, however, the message is simple: the dream of playing for Real Madrid has become a reality, and now the challenge is to prove that he belongs among the very best.
