Mbappé Shines as Real Madrid Beat Rayo: Player Ratings

Real Madrid hosted Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday in Matchday 5 of La Liga. After a particularly convincing first half, José Mourinho’s men struggled more after the break before regaining control late in the game. Several Madrid players stood out, especially Kylian Mbappé, who was involved in multiple goals.

Courtois decisive once again

Thibaut Courtois – 8/10

Even when Real Madrid appear to be fully in control, Courtois still finds a way to remind everyone of his importance. The Belgian goalkeeper was forced into several key saves and prevented Rayo from getting back into the game earlier. Without him, the match could have taken a very different turn.

A generally solid defence

Denzel Dumfries – 6.5/10

The right-back was slightly below the level of the rest of the team during the first half. He was caught out twice on his side, but became much more dangerous going forward after the break. He came close to scoring, first being denied by the goalkeeper and then by the crossbar.

Antonio Rüdiger – 7/10

A very serious performance from the German defender. Focused, aggressive and dominant in the duels, he helped keep Rayo’s attackers away from the Madrid goal and forced them into long-range efforts.

Ibrahima Konaté – 7/10

Konaté continued his strong run of form with another composed display. He kept things simple, avoided unnecessary risks and formed a solid partnership with Rüdiger.

Álvaro Carreras – 7/10

His first half was close to perfect. Carreras scored, won a penalty and constantly tried to push forward. He had more difficulties defensively after the interval, but his overall contribution was very positive.

Valverde and Bernardo controlled the tempo

Federico Valverde – 7/10

He only played 45 minutes, but his absence was immediately noticeable after the break. His work rate, pressing and ability to cover huge areas of the pitch were extremely valuable.

Bernardo Silva – 7/10

The Portuguese midfielder delivered a very high-level first-half performance. He was the main controller of the tempo and dictated play with intelligence and precision. However, his physical level dropped as the second half progressed.

Bellingham back to his influential best

Jude Bellingham – 7.5/10

A performance full of energy and intensity. The Englishman worked tirelessly between the lines and was rewarded with a superb goal. His pressing, movement and ability to make runs into dangerous areas once again gave Real Madrid a huge boost.

Encouraging Diomandé, sharper Vinicius

Yan Diomandé – 6/10

In his first start, the Ivorian winger showed several promising signs. He worked extremely hard defensively and looked electric with the ball at his feet. There is clearly still much more to come from him.

Vinicius Jr – 7/10

Probably his best opening 45 minutes of the season. The Brazilian looked much more involved and dangerous, notably providing the assist for Bellingham’s goal. His second half was more difficult, however, and one poor pass contributed to Rayo pulling a goal back.

⭐ Mbappé, Man of the Match

Kylian Mbappé – 8.5/10

Another major performance from the French superstar. Mbappé took responsibility from the penalty spot and made no mistake before later setting up Carreras perfectly.

He also came close to scoring a spectacular volley and once again showed clear progress in his defensive effort and off-ball work.

As so often, he eventually made the difference again by scoring his second goal of the match late on. Two goals, one assist and another performance worthy of a leader.

José Mourinho – 7/10

Real Madrid’s first half was arguably one of their best performances of the season so far. The collective pressing worked extremely well, the team won the ball back high up the pitch on several occasions and the improvement in their work without the ball was obvious.

Madrid struggled more after the break, but Mourinho managed to inject fresh energy into the team through his substitutions, particularly with the introduction of Arda Güler.

Overall, it was a very positive performance despite a difficult spell in the second half, and another sign that Mourinho’s ideas are beginning to take shape.
