Real Madrid puts the ball back in Vinicius’s court.

Real Madrid continue to reshape their squad during one of the busiest summer transfer windows in recent years. Under the leadership of newly appointed manager José Mourinho, the Spanish giants have already completed the signings of Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries, while David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos have all left the Santiago Bernabéu.

Despite these major changes, the biggest question surrounding the club is not a new signing but the future of Vinicius Junior.

Real Madrid puts the ball back in Vinicius's court.

The Brazilian winger has entered the final stretch of his contract, which expires at the end of next season. Negotiations over a new deal have been ongoing for nearly two years, and while discussions have recently intensified, no agreement has yet been reached. Reports suggest that both parties are moving closer to an extension, but several key issues remain unresolved.

According to Spanish outlet El Confidencial, Vinicius remains one of the world’s elite footballers despite experiencing a noticeable dip in form over the last two seasons. Much of that decline has been linked to the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the Ballon d’Or, a setback that reportedly affected the Brazilian both mentally and emotionally.

Even so, his numbers remain impressive. During the previous campaign, Vinicius scored 22 goals and provided 14 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions, once again proving to be one of Real Madrid’s most decisive attacking players.

Inside the offices of club president Florentino Pérez, the situation is crystal clear. There are only two possible outcomes: either Vinicius signs a contract extension or he is sold before becoming a free agent. The Madrid hierarchy has no intention of allowing one of the world’s most valuable players to leave for nothing in the summer of 2027.

Transfermarkt currently values Vinicius at around €140 million, making him the seventh most valuable footballer in world football. Losing such an asset without receiving a transfer fee is considered completely unacceptable by the club’s board.

At the same time, Vinicius‘ relationship with sections of the Real Madrid fanbase has become increasingly complicated. His inconsistent performances, occasional whistles from supporters and several tense moments with the Bernabéu crowd have generated criticism. Questions have also been raised about his on-field chemistry with Kylian Mbappé, while his reported salary demands have created additional concerns among the club’s decision-makers.

Everything now depends on the player.

Real Madrid are unwilling to meet Vinicius’ reported salary request of around €30 million per season. Club officials believe their latest proposal is fair and are now waiting for the Brazilian international to give his final answer. Another round of negotiations is expected to take place this week in an attempt to bridge the remaining financial gap and finally reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, the club continues to build a squad capable of returning to the top of European football. Mourinho has already welcomed four high-profile reinforcements, significantly strengthening both the defense and midfield ahead of the new campaign.

Another major target remains Ivorian sensation Yan Diomandé. Although some observers have interpreted Real Madrid’s pursuit of the talented youngster as preparation for a possible Vinicius departure, El Confidencial suggests otherwise. The Spanish club reportedly sees Diomandé primarily as a right-wing option rather than a direct replacement for the Brazilian.

Should the transfer be completed, Real Madrid envision an exciting attacking trio featuring Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomandé. Club officials believe this combination could become one of the most dangerous front lines in Europe and play a central role in restoring Los Blancos to the summit of both Spanish and European football.

For now, however, all eyes remain on Vinicius. His decision over the coming days could shape not only his own future but also the direction of Real Madrid’s ambitious new project under José Mourinho.
