Jude Bellingham was full of praise for Carlos Espí after the young striker made a brief but decisive appearance, scoring the winning goal in Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol.
Jude Bellingham had plenty of positive words for Carlos Espí following Real Madrid’s hard-fought win against Espanyol. Introduced late in the game, the new Madrid signing made an immediate impact by scoring the decisive goal in the closing stages and securing all three points for José Mourinho’s side.

“Like Joselu Junior”
Espí’s dramatic contribution reminded Bellingham of former Real Madrid striker Joselu, who became known for producing important goals in crucial moments after coming off the bench.
“Carlos comes off the bench and scores a goal like Joselu Junior. It’s a good way to start,” Bellingham said enthusiastically in the mixed zone after the final whistle.
The English midfielder had also played a major role in the victory, opening the scoring during the first half. Bellingham took advantage of a superb free-kick delivery from Arda Güler, finding space inside the penalty area before directing a powerful header into the net.
According to Bellingham, the move was not a coincidence, as Real Madrid had specifically worked on similar situations during training.
“We worked on that in training this week. It was a very good ball from Arda, and everyone’s movement created the space for me. In the end, it was quite an easy goal,” he explained.
However, Bellingham was more satisfied with the team’s collective performance than with his own goal. Real Madrid created several opportunities to extend their advantage but were forced to fight until the final minutes before Espí eventually delivered the winner.
“We played the game very well. We created a lot of chances to score the second goal, but this was a mental victory,” Bellingham said.

The England international also refused to get carried away by his individual performance. Despite finding the net, he insisted that his responsibilities within the team go far beyond scoring goals.
“I think I did the same things I’ve been doing over the last two years, just with a goal added,” he explained. “When I score, everyone says I played well, but for me the most important thing is helping the team in every area—with the ball, with my dribbling and defensively as well.”
Bellingham’s comments underline his desire to become an increasingly complete midfielder rather than simply being judged by goals and assists.
The former Borussia Dortmund star finished his interview by highlighting what he believes could be one of Real Madrid’s greatest strengths this season: unity inside the dressing room.
“We are all together. For me, that is the most important thing in football—to stay together in every situation, during the difficult moments and during the good moments. Always together. That’s important.”
For Real Madrid, the victory represented an encouraging start, while Carlos Espí could hardly have dreamed of a better way to announce himself: coming off the bench and scoring a late winner that immediately earned him comparisons with Joselu.
